Ephesus is a place where St. John the Apostle wrote his Gospel. It is assumed that he died and was buried in Ephesus. His tomb was located in the six-domed Byzantine church completed in AD 565. Basilica had the shape of a cross with a length of 425 feet/130 meters. In the Middle Ages, the church played an important role as a place of Christian pilgrimage until it fell into Turkish hands and was converted into a mosque. Basilica of St. John was completely destroyed by earthquakes in the second half of the 14th century.
