Historically there was no major community on Easter Island. The whole island was divided in 11 or 12 triangular territories with each having access to water. People were living in many villages spread around the island. The town of Hanga Roa was established in 1903 when not more than 200 remaining islanders, from the original number of 10,000 to 15,000, were restricted to live only in this area.
