A short ferry crossing and we were in a summer colony on the Great Lakes. We arrived at the small Mackinac Island located in Lake Huron. This place became popular at the end of the 19th century and has the status to be the best in the region to this day. Since the beginning, automobiles have been prohibited on the island. Consequently, all goods, rubbish and recycling transported are by Horse-drawn Carriages only. You travel around the island in horse-drawn carriages or by bicycle
To get to know the island better, we rented bikes right at the ferry dock. The narrow circular road on Mackinac Island is 13 km / 8 miles long. It is the official Michigan state highway M-185. It is the only road in the USA where car traffic is prohibited.
Clean and tidy, quiet and calm, neat and cute, Mackinac Island is the America at its best. Many of US presidents visited the island. It is hard to find other such places in the whole United States.
