The Monastery of the Hieronymites is probably the most impressive historical building in Lisbon. It was built to commemorate Vasco da Gama's voyage to India in 1498. Work began in 1502 and took 70 years to complete.
The Jeronimos Monastery is one of the most prominent examples of a unique style of Portuguese architecture, the Manueline Gothic. It can be recognized by its typical Manueline nautical motifs, ropes and anchors. All of this is combined with motifs from the history of Portuguese expansion, such as elephants and palm trees.
