Historic Lisbon is a relatively small city; you can see the most important sites in a day or two. Expect very high temperatures in the Portuguese capital in the summer. The city is also extremely crowded with tourists. However, Lisbon is still worth visiting for its maritime history and interesting architecture.
It was from Lisbon that the great armada departed for the conquest of Ceuta in North Africa in 1415. This was a key moment in history that marked the beginning of European expansion. It was precisely the beginning of the Age of Discovery, which in turn led to the creation of the Portuguese Empire.
