Shortly after two hijacked passenger planes hit both World Trade Center towers in terrorist attacks on New York City, a third attack took place in Washington D.C. At 9:37, American Airlines Flight 77, a Boeing 757 hit the facade of the Pentagon. It caused a part of the building to collapse. A big fire spread in the damaged area.
The monument commemorates those who died in the attack on the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. It contains 184 illuminated benches, arranged along lines facing the wall of building where the plane hit. Each bench symbolizing a victim, positioned is to differentiate those on board the American Airlines aircraft and those who were at the Pentagon. Each line of benches combines the victims according to their age, and each bench contains a small pool of water that reflects light.
